About the city
Corte is a town and a sub-prefecture in the Haute-Corse department of France on the island of Corsica. It is the fourth largest town in Corsica, after Ajaccio, Bastia, and Porto-Vecchio. Sites of interest include the Citadel, the Museum of Corsica and the University of Corsica.
City areas
The viewing platform is one of the highlights of the raised area of the town around the citadel. The position has been especially set aside and developed so as to give the finest views of the Corsican countryside as can be achieved.
Attractions
Although Corte is an historical city, its history mainly resumes to Pascale Paoli’s revolution for independence, as it was considered his “spiritual capital”. This however means that the city has a more Corsican feeling to it than any other town on the island.
Transportation
One of the best solutions for getting into Corte is by flying to either Calvi or Bastia and then taking a train. Another options would be to get on the E25 and drive there, crossing by ferry from Genoa to Bastia.
History & Civilization
Corte is set at the geographical center of the island. Unlike its sister fortress towns on the coast, Corte was not founded by the Genoese, but governed by Pascal Paoli, the father of the Corsican independence movement, after he stormed the Citadel in 1755.
Restaurants & Nightlife
Unlike the more known Corsican towns that occupy the shorelines of the island, Corte is not much for seafood. Instead you can find here a delightful choice of Corsican restaurants that offer their patrons a taste of the island’s culture and traditions.
Corte University
Corte is the seat of a university, but also the Regional Fund for Contemporary Art of the Corsican region. The University of Corsica has about 4200 students since the beginning of 2007. Its headquarters, at its foundation, is in Corte the "paoline city". It has 3 universities spread over 2 campuses.
